Computers Installed in the Elementary School
When Donaciano Garcia (President of GB2006), visited Barranca in December of 2006, he found that there was a need and desire for technology from the community, The decision was made to use the funds contributed by its members to buy the school computers. In March of 2007 five computers were purchased, delivered, and installed to the Elementary school in Barranca Fierro Mixtepec. The Director of the school Mardonio Juarez Martinez played a major role in arranging and installing of the computers.
Having computers in this school is a huge accomplishment and a great privilege considering that electricity was installed only a few years ago and there is not even a telephone in this village. The school serves 85 students who now have the benefit of learning how to use a computer. Students of the secondary school and a few who attend college also have access to these computers to do homework. Otherwise the closest computer is in the city which is over an hour away.
In July of 2007 GB2006 donated 120 trees to the town. Planting various fruit trees such as mango, avocado, orange and mandarin trees are very valuable to the village. They provide shade, beauty and fruit for the people to enjoy.
Donaciano Garcia recently took a trip to Oaxaca and met with many people regarding future projects that will help the people and economy of this town. He has made connections with other organizations that can help with projects such as building a bridge and creating a library.
In February 2008 Donaciano took a short trip to Barranca to help distribute a concrete mixer for the community. The Concrete Mixer was given to the community of Barranca by the members of Generacion Barranca 2006 Inc. which cost $2,500. This concrete mixer is a great addition to the community and can be used for improvements in individual homes or local facilities. Construction machinery is often expensive and difficult to access for many people in the area. This machine is a great contribution and one step towards these people becoming more self sufficient.
Donaciano Garcia also held a very important meeting with officials and leaders of the area. The presidents of San Miguel Mixtepec and Barranca Fierro attended this event. Teachers from the area attended, including the supervisor of the school District. The meeting was a success where a discussion was held on working together and unifying the community. A presentation was made to these community members on the organization Generacion Barranca Inc. and the response was very positive. This meeting is one big step towards the bettering of this village and unifying the surrounding villages to work together for a common goal.
